About EFL Cup.
The EFL Cup, currently known as the Carabao Cup for sponsorship reasons, is an annual knockout competition for the top 92 English and Welsh football clubs in the top four tiers of English football. It is one of the three major domestic trophies in England, alongside the Premier League and the FA Cup.
The current champions are Newcastle United, who won their first title in the 2025 final by defeating Liverpool 2-1. Liverpool is the most successful club in the competition's history with 10 titles.
Competition Overview
Format: The EFL Cup is a straight knockout competition played over seven rounds. All rounds are single-legged, except for the semi-finals, which are played over two legs (home and away).
Participants: All 92 clubs from the Premier League, Championship, League One, and League Two are eligible to compete.
Schedule: Matches are primarily held on midweek evenings, allowing the competition to conclude relatively early, with the final typically taking place in late February or early March at Wembley Stadium.
European Qualification: The winner of the EFL Cup secures a place in the following season's UEFA Conference League play-off round.
Prestige & Prize Money: While considered less prestigious than the FA Cup or Premier League, it offers a realistic chance for silverware and a European spot. The prize money for the winner is £100,000.
