About Supercopa de España.
The Supercopa de España is an annual football competition featuring four top Spanish teams (La Liga winners/runners-up and Copa del Rey finalists) in a knockout format, typically held in Saudi Arabia in January. Barcelona is the most successful club with 15 titles, followed by Real Madrid with 13.
History & Format
Foundation and Early Years: Founded in 1982, the tournament initially featured only the La Liga and Copa del Rey winners competing in a two-legged match. In some cases, if a team won both the league and cup, they were automatically awarded the Supercopa trophy.
Modern Four-Team Format: Since 2020, the competition has adopted a "final four" format to ensure a blend of league dominance and cup glory. The tournament now comprises two semi-finals and a final, all one-legged affairs.
International Venue: The tournament is primarily hosted in Saudi Arabia as part of a deal to globalize Spanish football and generate revenue, with matches played at venues like the King Abdullah Sport City Stadium in Jeddah.
Current Rules: In the modern format, if a match ends in a draw after regular time, it proceeds directly to penalties to avoid player fatigue, a rule introduced in the 2025 edition.
